Boots, check. Goggles, check. Scuba gear for the monsoon we will get during the race....check!
Today was the 4th round of the Indiana District 15 harescramble series in Plymouth, IN. The day started off with cloudy skies and rumor that a frikin Tsunami was on the way and was going to hit right around noon. (the time my race started) Well sure enough, as all 240+ riders sit on the line ready to do work, the rain gods come out and showed us their almighty powers. I literally looked as if i just jumped into a pool within less than a minute of sitting in the rain. The rain from the days before and the additional rain we were currently getting made the race a mud-fest! It was Intense. Running water. Mud holes to bury a Honda 450 and Yamaha250f to there handle bars. Sideways rain. You name it. We had it.
Well all engines shut off for the dead engine start format. Green flag waves and all "A" riders on the first row take off. Luckily the first turn was like ice because I had a horrible start and everyone in front of me slid right out of the way enabling me to grab 3rd right off the first turn. Oh I almost forgot, when you think 5 tear offs will be enough....put on 13 more. ;) the start went right into a nice fast flowing grass track before jumping into the woods. But the whole grass track was under water. It could have passed for a small river so my goggles were trashed within the first 80 yrds from getting roosted and splashed every which way so i had to 86 the goggles as soon as we rolled into the woods. The first lap I settled in 3rd place. Learning the track while squinting/eyes shut almost the whole first lap from getting roosted from the rider in front of me since I had no goggles.
About 5 miles in, the rider in front of me chose a poor line and i saw an opening and took my chance. Luckily he got hung up giving me the opportunity to take over 2nd place. Since it was still the first lap, 1st place hadn't pulled to far of a gap and I was able to catch up with him and keep a steady beginning race pace. We came flying down this whooped out sand hill and there were many options as to which line to take. The line he chose put him to the inside of the next turn. My line wasn't as fast, but I held the throttle on my KTM/Frazier Motorsports/Naarden.biz KTM 250 just a little longer than my competitor giving me the edge on the corner to take the lead. As i came around to the main check to mark the end of the first lap and the beginning of a race, I stopped to grab a fresh pair of Scott goggles and took off again. My stop enabled 2nd place to almost re-pass me but I got out quick enough for him to be right on my back tire.
After that point, I put the hammer down and slowly kept pulling away from 2nd place lap after lap. Smooth and Steady was key to this race. On the last lap I stayed focused and kept looking ahead to my 1st place Overall win!!
-I just have to add that theres no greater feeling knowing that out of all the people at the race track...I was the fastest person out of everyone. Thats when you look back and reflect on all of those hard days in the gym. When you wanted to cut your 10 mile run short, or not do an extra set with the weights. It all pays off in the end.
